These are events that are coming up and who to talk about the events
19th New Zealand Jamboree 29 December - 6 January
Jamboree is a 10 day Scout camp.
This camp is held every 3 years and it is a high light of a Youth’s time in Scouting.
There are about 5000 people from around New Zealand at a Jamboree. This is the biggest national event that is held by Scouts New Zealand.
Joti / Jota 16-17 October
Jamboree on the Air and Jamboree on the Internet.
This is a worldwide event that youth can talk to other youth around the world, using Radios or the Internet.
Rimutaka has a Zone camp, and on the Sunday has a Raft race.
Cub 9 time 7 August
This is a Zone cub event that is open to 9 year olds, it teaches them a some more skills – either refreshing what is known and learning new skills.
Cossgrove
Rimutaka Zone held a Cossgrove at the Rimutaka Scout hall over the of 27 - 28 March.
23 Scouts from around the Zone attended, with great weather (sunny on the Saturday, Light rain on the Sunday).
Scouts under took a range of activities including - Sleeping in tents, 1st aid, Hygiene, Axes and Knives, Tents, Fires, Map and Compass, Backwards cooking, Knots and Lashings, Pioneering project and a water fight.
The weekend was enjoyed by all and all the Scouts learnt something.

Lansdowne at Ruapehu
Over the weekend of 19-21 March 2010 – scouts, cubs and a kea from Lansdowne Scout group
spent time at the Scouting Ski Lodge on the slopes of Mt Ruapehu.
As part of this terms program “Making Waves”, the group made waves at the Taranaki Falls and at the Tokaanu thermal swimming pool.

Zone Dry Land Regatta 2010
The Rimutaka Zone Dry Land Regatta Family camp was held in March at Kaitoke Regional Park.
During the weekend we had 6 of the 9 groups there.
When we got there we found Lower Hutt Zone Scouts camping there as well, and they were keen to see some of our activities so they could use them next time.
Saturday rained on and off all day while Groups undertook their own activities such as bush walks, and river walk (the cubs got very wet), making pioneering devices, and battle preparations.
Saturday evening a campfire was held.
Sunday was a great day starting with a mock battle run by Alf's Imperial Army.
This is a battle with paper swords and flour bombs where chivalry and artistry are supreme. Great fun was had by all.
This was followed by the Dry Land Regatta race, essentially a land yacht race, with teams bombarded by all manner of water devices.
Silverpine, the reigning champions prevailed again.
For some strange reason the Zone Scout Leader got very wet (maybe because everyone in the Zone was after him). Thanks to all those who participated, and set the year off to a cracking start.

Upper Hutt Summer Carnival Mud slide 2010
Rimutaka Zone ran a flat mud slide at the Summer Carnival – using Black Plastic – Horizontal Bungee – some dirt and lots of water.
We went through over 56 bottles of drink (I had to send someone out to get some during the day as the two 24 packs I got was not enough, then we still ran out at about 3pm).
About 90 participants received certificates for participation.
Venturers gave out a lot of free brochures entitling the bearer to one month free.

Zone Mudslide 2010
Rural Gladstone was once again treated to an estimated 2-300 people sliding down a hillside this year.
With the benefit of a wet summer, the sliding and muddying was easier than in the usual drought conditions that prevail.
Good to see several from 'south of the hill' coming over.

JOTA / JOTI camp 2009
48 youth from 4 groups (Heretaunga, Lansdowne, Te Runga , Carterton and Greytown)
shared Te Runga's Jota / Joti camp over the weekend.
The youth were split into 8 groups each group got to take part in
Fox Hunting, Jota, Joti, Pikelet cooking, Poker work, Basic Scouting, River crossing, and visiting a small Air Force display.
Saturday night we had a campfire
Sunday the Medieval table was set up as well as a visit from a vintage Fire Engine.
Youth made several radio contacts, but JOTI 'hits' outnumbered this and included several countries. (see Downloads to see picture)
Over night on Saturday there was heavy rain and we woke up to a puddle in the campsite.
The youth had a great (albeit wet) time and enjoyed them self, apart from a few been very wet.
Thanks to all those Leaders and other supporting adults.
Special thanks to Bev McIsaac, Te Runga chairperson who developed the Te Runga programme and broadened it to include other participants.
Also to Barry Buchanan of Heretaunga for setting up the JOTI base, and the two Air Force guys who were a highlight. (One confessed later to having been an Ohakune Scout, and gave out badges at the close).

Cub Adventure Camp 2009
31 Cubs and 16 Adults, from 8 of the 9 Groups in the Zone, enjoyed the Zone Cub Adventure Camp at Holdsworth.
Thanks Pete, Sara, and Gwyn (Lansdowne), Campbell, (Silverpine), Debbie and Rowan (Te Runga), Graham, (Rimutaka), Simon( St Joes) and Matt from Totara Park - the Leaders who made Adventure camp such a great time.
Rowan who showed us how to make a whistle from willow wood.
Simon who played his guitar.
Pete and Graham provided many activities that made the camp so successful.
Gwyn cooked for us.
Debbie took 3 extra Cubs under her wing!
And parents helped and were such good fun.
Chris the DOC Ranger took us on a tramp up the old unused Gentle Annie track, no wonder it is not used anymore.
Going along the ridge, talking flora, fauna and geology and showing us how to use a map and compass and your eyes and brains.
How when going OVER the side of the ridge not to be to close behind, spread out a bit and watch for dislodged rocks for they gather speed and height and are a hazard.
Cooked lunch over 10 fires, on the banks of a lovely stream and didn’t leave the willow sticks behind, don’t want willow growing in the forest, through the stream, up the stream over the stream up and down to the main track and doing a river crossing back to Camp.
The Cubs built rafts that they then carried down to the river, down over the river bed twice crossing the water to the pool below the rapids, using a rope to pull themselves through the pool to the end by the bank then Cubs had to get themselves back onto the road by climbing up a very steep high bank again using a rope and bringing the raft with them.
Campfire was held in the lodge with the rain came down.
Following morning we bagged firewood at the ranger’s house and had our outdoors cooking in the lodge.
Scout Mountain Bike Ride 2009
We had 20 Scouts from 4 groups take part in the Zone Mountain bike ride.
The Winner was Heretaunga Group.
We found the course was way too short (we took some out of it - but too
much at a guess).
The first person was back in 15 min, so next time we need to make it a lot longer, maybe go around twice or somewhere
different.
Cub 9 Time 2009
47 9 yr olds attended biggest turnout yet.
The programme ran so well that we could have finished early! Keeping well to times was considerably assisted by Graham Jones having cell phone contact with Brett Abbott who was in Harcourt Park manning the compass course.
Very interesting to see how the Leaders took this in hand and expanded their bases to keep the Cubs occupied.
The Cubs themselves really seemed to enjoy themselves and in the most part learnt something new or expanded on the known which is what this badge is about.
5 Bases. Compass course. Confidence course. Lashings. Shelters and Fire-lighting.
Leader’s personal experiences really come into play in all these bases so we all learn something new.

Service Weekend at Brookfield
About 70 Zone personnel took part in last weekend's Service project, upgrading a track at Brookfield.
Thanks to all those who put their hands up and volunteered, and to John Cavill for organising the process so well.
It was particularly pleasing to so many people working to a common goal.
Top marks especially to the youth who by Sunday afternoon were focused almost entirely on moving shingle along the track - by hand!
Scout Zone Camping Competition 2009
Four Groups took part in the Zone Scout Camping competition, vying for the "Fred Moselen Memorial Camping Competition Trophy".
The weather added to the challenge, although the Mauriceville site seemed spared from the worst of the elements.
After selecting and setting up their respective camp sites, each Troop had to follow their own programme and cook all their meals.
Groups invited different Leaders from around the Zone to Dinner, with the competition judges enjoying some fine dining from each group (surely a key points scoring opportunity?)!
Troops came together in the evening and shared their evening programme including learning a new song form another culture (Bronze Community Cornerstone).
Congratulations to Silverpine Scouts who set the bar for all the other Troops for the future. Congratulations also to Alex Fraser of Lansdowne who was (some would say finally) presented his Chief Scout Award.

Cub 8 2009
36 nominally eight year Cubs enjoyed a balmy Sunday afternoon "Cub 8" activity at Tunnel Gulley.
Highlights included a bush walk, helping the adults to put up tents (I mean....) and following ZCL Barbara in Baloo's dance!
All five Upper Hutt packs, and Lansdowne from the north, were represented.
Especially pleasing to meet three St Joe's leaders who previously eluded me.
Zone Cossgrove 2009
A Cossgrove course was held at Mt Holdsworth.
19 Scouts and 10 leaders took part.
Some of the leaders were able to sign off Skills, Tools of the Job and part of their Out and about.
Despite the rain the Scouts took part in range of activities over the weekend including - Learning about new award scheme, Games, Map & Compass, Scouts own, Axe & knives, Fires, Backwards cooking, Knot & Lashings, Personal Hygiene, First aid, Tent & Campsites, and Pioneering.
Photos of this event can be viewed on the photos page.
Zone Camp / Dry land Regatta 2009
7 out of 9 groups in the Zone where at the Zone camp.
Groups provided an activity for other Groups to take part in on the Saturday afternoon. The youth had a lot of fun and got wet with some of the activities.
A good camp fire was held on Saturday night.
On the Sunday we had a mock battle with paper swords and flour bombs sorted out by the Alf's Army.
The annual Dry Land Regatta race on the Sunday, We had a lot of water devices firing at any one that was racing. The event was won by Silverpine Group.
Photos of this event can be viewed on the photos page.
Upper Hutt Summer Carnival 2009
Activities at the Upper Hutt Summer Carnival including kites, rockets & horizontal mud bungy.
4500 - 5000 people attended the carnival so it was an excellent opportunity to showcase Scouting to the public.
About 150 entered the mud slide and got down and dirty. We had a number of kids interested in joining and at least 1 potential leader.
Photos of this event can be viewed on the photos page.
Mud Side 2009
We had a mudslide for the Zone at Gladstone.
Estimates are that some 200 people turned up and slid down 90 metres of water slide, and then from 5-20 metres of mud - depending on momentum.
Photos of this event can be viewed on the photos page.
